ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A teenager charged as an adult has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in connection with the 2024 killing of an Albuquerque man during an attempted vehicle theft, according to the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors say Jeremy Jones pleaded guilty Monday to First-Degree Murder and Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder in the death of Christopher Sanchez.
According to court records, the shooting occurred on Aug. 27, 2024, when Jones and several co-defendants were allegedly stealing vehicles in a neighborhood. Investigators say the group attempted to take Sanchez’s truck from the driveway of his home.
Authorities say a neighbor alerted Sanchez that someone was trying to steal his vehicle. When Sanchez went outside to confront the suspects, Jones immediately shot him.
Prosecutors say Jones and the other suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle. As they drove away, they allegedly continued firing shots toward Sanchez while he was lying on the ground.
Jones was 16 years old at the time of the shooting and was prosecuted as an adult. Under the plea agreement, he faces up to 30 years in the New Mexico Corrections Department.
The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office says the case remains active against the remaining co-defendants.
