ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Organizers of the Gathering of Nations Powwow say the event is ending after its 2026 gathering due to long‑term planning and coordination challenges beyond their control, without pointing to a single specific cause.
In an announcement made in August 2025, Gathering of Nations Limited said multiple factors made it difficult to plan the event into the future. The organization described the decision as a choice to “close this chapter” after more than four decades, billing the final event as “The Last Dance.”
While organizers have not detailed those challenges, reporting indicates several ongoing pressures surrounding the event. The powwow’s large scale requires year‑round planning, significant resources, and extensive coordination among performers, vendors, venue operators, and staff. Veterans of the event have described the demands as intense, both financially and logistically.
The event’s longtime venue, Expo New Mexico, has also been facing potential redevelopment plans, raising uncertainty about long‑term availability. While organizers have not directly cited the venue situation as the reason for ending the powwow, reporting shows it has been part of the broader context surrounding long‑term planning concerns.
Organizers have emphasized that the decision was not abrupt, but rather the result of evaluating the sustainability of the event after a 43‑year run. They have confirmed there will be no Gathering of Nations in 2027, formally ending one of the largest Native cultural events in North America.
