Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –A year long investigation by the NM Department of Justice has resulted in a planned lawsuit against CYFD by Attorney General Raul Torrez. The investigation by the NM Department of Justice uncovered severe child safety issues and CYFD abusing the state’s confidentiality laws in order to cover up their failures. The NMDOJ’s report, issued today (Wed) found that CYFD “has inverted its legislative mandate by prioritizing family reunification at virtually any cost” over a child’s health and safety. This has led to severe consequences including the deaths of at least seven children since the investigation began. The report goes on to say that CYFD has “wholly abandoned child safety as its guiding principle,” with its shortcomings representing a “systematic moral failing.” The DOJ investigation included interviews with families, case workers, police officers, police reports and body camera footage.
