Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – Albuquerque will not be switching to a new voting system after a proposal to switch the city’s elections to ranked choice voting was rejected by a 6 to 3 vote during Monday nights city council meeting.
Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn was one of the co-sponsors of the bill arguing that ranked choice voting would save millions of tax payer dollars by eliminating the need to have runoff elections.
Those opposed said the new system would confuse voters and most are not educated enough on candidates to be able to rank them in that form of electoins.
Councilor Dan Lewis pointed to Santa Fe which has had ranked choice voting for 8 years as still confusing to for voters.
Lewis and fellow city councilors Dan Champine, Brooke Bassan, Renée Grout, Joaquín Baca and Council President Klarissa Peña voted against the ordinance. Councilors Nichole Rogers, Tammy Fiebelkorn and Stephanie Telles voted in favor of ranked choice voting.
