Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – The City of Albuquerque is preparing for a tighter budget year under a new proposal from Mayor Tim Keller.
The mayor released his $1.47-billion budget on Wednesday, which cuts about $35 million from current spending and eliminates 247 positions. City officials say nearly all of those jobs were already vacant, including eight command staff positions within the Albuquerque Police Department. The administration says rising costs and uncertainty around federal funding drove the reductions, while still prioritizing public safety, homelessness, and city services. Some funding would be redirected toward hiring police service aides, expanding Albuquerque Community Safety, and increasing support for behavioral health and motel voucher programs. The City Council will review the proposal over the next month before a final vote in May.
