The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments today in a case that could reshape asylum access at the U.S.–Mexico border.
The dispute centers on whether asylum seekers can apply for protection at official ports of entry. The Trump administration has been seeing broad authority to turn migrants away, regardless of their asylum claims.
Immigrant advocacy groups have filed multiple lawsuits, arguing the policy violates the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows noncitizens who are physically present in the U.S. or arriving at a designated port of entry to apply for asylum. At issue is how the law defines when a person has legally “arrived” in the United States.
