Otero County, NM (KKOB) – A convicted sex offender from Colorado has been captured in Chaparral, New Mexico.
According to a spokesperson with the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Colorado, Jorge Campos was spotted on a bus heading to Mexico. Deputies with the Otero County Sheriff’s office were notified and Campos was arrested at an Allsup’s gas station in Chaparral.
On Friday, Campos was convicted of five charges of sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse. The victim was under the age of 15 and his girlfriend’s daughter. The assaults occurred during a period between November 2020 and April 2023 in Douglas County, Colorado. However, Campos didn’t show up to the courtroom and cut off his GPS monitor trying to escape to Mexico.
Campos was spotted in Las Vegas, New Mexico. State Police, the U.S Marshals and ICE agents participated in the search for Campos and found him in Chaparral, just across the border with El Paso.
Now that he is in custody, Campos could face a life sentence in connection with the charges.. He is expected to be extradited back to Colorado.
