The Albuquerque Rugby Club is going international once again. On St. Patrick’s Day, the club announced that its local team, the Albuquerque Aardvarks, will travel to Ireland this summer for an international rugby tour highlighted by a match scheduled for August 8, 2026.
The Irish opponent has not yet been finalized, but club officials say they are narrowing down potential host teams and expect to announce additional details in the coming weeks.
The Ireland trip marks the next step in the club’s expanding international presence. In 2025, the Albuquerque Rugby Club completed two tours to Mexico, giving players the opportunity to compete internationally while building relationships with rugby organizations outside the United States. Club leaders say those tours helped raise the profile of New Mexico rugby and laid the groundwork for future international partnerships.
This summer’s Ireland tour is expected to combine competitive play with cultural exchange, offering players exposure to one of the sport’s most historic rugby nations. Ireland is widely recognized for its deep rugby tradition, with clubs and communities where the sport plays a central role in local culture.
Beyond the game itself, the trip reflects broader ties between New Mexico and Ireland. In recent years, organizations in Albuquerque and across Ireland have worked to strengthen connections in business, technology, and cultural exchange. Local leaders have pointed to growing collaboration in trade, innovation, and community partnerships between the two regions.
Club leadership says the tour is about more than a single match. The experience is designed to foster long‑term relationships between rugby communities in New Mexico and Ireland, while giving players a chance to represent Albuquerque on an international stage.
The Albuquerque Aardvarks’ August 8 match will serve as the centerpiece of the tour, but the full schedule is expected to include additional events, training sessions, and opportunities to engage with local rugby clubs and communities abroad.
New Mexico’s rugby scene has continued to grow in recent years, with increased participation, international competition, and community support. Club officials say international tours help strengthen the sport locally by bringing new experiences back to players, coaches, and supporters at home.
Details about the Irish host club, tour itinerary, and community partners are expected to be released later this spring as planning continues.
For now, the announcement signals another milestone for Albuquerque rugby—one that takes the local club across the Atlantic and into the heart of one of the sport’s most storied rugby cultures.
