Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – A long Albuquerque City Council meeting is expected tonight as two controversial items are on the agenda.
One item which could bring the most discussion is a measure aimed at protecting immigrant communities. The “Safer Community Places” ordinance would prevent Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from using city-owned property for operations.
It also limits immigration enforcement in places like schools, hospitals, and city-operated facilities unless there’s a warrant.
Also a hot topic tonight, is a measure that would raise the city’s gross receipts tax rate from more than 7.5% to over 8%, which could result in consumers paying about 50 cents more for every $100 spent in the city.
Councilor Brook Bassan, who is sponsoring the legislation, said the increase could help pay for projects throughout the city, such as multi-generational centers, roads, and affordable housing.
Tonight’s city council meeting starts at 5 p.m.
