ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Bernalillo County confirms that former sheriff Phil Snedeker is officially running for Bernalillo County sheriff, setting up a Democratic primary race against current Sheriff John Allen.
Snedeker is no stranger to the ballot. He previously ran for the Democratic nomination for Bernalillo County sheriff in 2022 but lost to Allen, who went on to win the general election. Two years later, in 2024, Snedeker launched a campaign for the Democratic primary in New Mexico’s State Senate District 21. He lost that race to Athena Christodoulou, who later fell to Republican Nicole L. Tobiassen in the general election.
Snedeker has decades of law enforcement experience. He was first elected sheriff of Quay County in 1987 and has held various public safety roles throughout the state over his career.
With both Snedeker and Allen running as Democrats, the race will be decided in the upcoming primary before moving on to the general election.
