Albuquerque, NM (KKOB)- 22-year old Juan Torres was arrested Friday night after running through a New Mexico State Police DWI checkpoint near the I-25 northbound frontage road and Camino De Salud in Albuquerque.
During the checkpoint, a black Kia accelerated through the stopping area, ignoring officers’ commands and nearly hitting another vehicle. The driver then took off from the scene leading officers on a pursuit, running multiple red lights before finally stopping on eastbound I-40 near Carlisle.
During the stop, police say Torres, attempted to switch seats with a passenger and repeatedly said to be armed while refusing commands. NMSP report that after nearly fifteen minutes of trying to de-escalate a dangerous situation, officers safely took the suspect into custody with help from the Albuquerque Police Department.
The report said that Torres, showed clear signs of intoxication, had an open container in the vehicle, refused chemical testing, and was found to have an active felony warrant.
Torres was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on multiple charges, including Aggravated DWI (refusal), Aggravated Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting/Obstructing, Open Container, No Driver’s License, Concealing Identity, and an outstanding felony probation warrant.
