ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Sandia National Laboratories will conduct a controlled explosives test on Thursday, Feb. 26, at its test site on the south end of Kirtland Air Force Base. The testing window is scheduled between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to laboratory officials.
Residents in Albuquerque may hear a loud explosion and could see black smoke or dust briefly rising above the base during the experiment. The test will be performed at Sandia’s Thunder Range facility, which is routinely used for national security–related experiments.
Sandia says all hazards associated with the test are fully controlled, and the operation complies with required environmental regulations and test‑site permits. Officials emphasize that the experiment directly supports the lab’s national security mission.
The timing of the test could change depending on weather conditions, and updates will be issued if schedules shift.
