ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – The New Mexico Goatheads took a major step toward their inaugural season over the weekend, announcing a multi‑year affiliation agreement with the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche.
The Goatheads, who will compete in the ECHL, now have a formal development path connecting New Mexico players to both the AHL and NHL levels. Team officials say the partnership brings additional coaching resources and player‑development support from the Avalanche and their AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles.
As the state prepares for its first season of professional hockey in more than a decade, Avalanche scouting leadership says fans can expect a style of play in Rio Rancho that reflects Colorado’s fast and competitive approach.
During Saturday’s announcement, the Goatheads also introduced their team mascot, Billy, to fans.
The Goatheads are scheduled to begin play in October at the Rio Rancho Events Center.
