ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – A deadly multi‑vehicle crash on the west side of Albuquerque shut down westbound I‑40 for several hours Monday before the roadway was eventually reopened.
According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around mile marker 144, between Atrisco Vista and Rio Puerco. Deputies described the scene as a “serious multi‑vehicle crash” involving vehicles that caught fire. Authorities confirmed that at least one person died.
The interstate closure caused significant delays for morning drivers as investigators and fire crews worked the scene and cleared the wreckage. By midday, BCSO reported that all westbound lanes had reopened and traffic was moving again through the area.
No additional details about the victim or the cause of the crash have been released.
