Santa Fe, NM(KKOB) – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is expected to sign a bill that makes it mandatory for student drivers to take a class on “vulnerable road users” like bicyclists, skateboarders and scooter riders. On a final vote of 45-2, the House passed SB 73 less than a week after the Senate passed the bill. The measure will only apply to new drivers and not create new requirements for current license holders according to bill sponsor Senator Heather Berghmans of Albuquerque.
BikeABQ President Patrick Martin said it’s “really important that vulnerable road users are taken seriously as people who are on the roads and so it’s heartening to see them formally included in the driver’s education curriculum.”
