Las Cruces, NM (KKOB)- Authorities in Doña Ana County have identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting following a structure fire Tuesday night.
Deputies say 35-year-old Dylan Leonard refused to leave his burning property on Watson Lane after firefighters found multiple areas of the home on fire. Sheriff Kim Stewart says deputies tried repeatedly to get Leonard to come out, but he continued to refuse. Around 8:34 p.m., Leonard emerged from the home holding a knife and lunged toward deputies, injuring one of them. Shots were fired by the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office and the Mesilla Marshals Office.
Leonard died at the scene, and the deputy suffered minor injuries. The officers involved are on administrative leave as the Officer-Involved Shooting Task Force investigates.
