ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – A New Mexico EMT was stabbed by a patient in the back of a moving ambulance Wednesday afternoon, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
Gila Regional Medical Center EMS crews were called to the Mimbres area for a medical complaint involving 35‑year‑old Kel Avena. After evaluating him at his home, responders determined he needed additional care and began transporting him to the hospital.
While en route, deputies say Avena became combative and attacked an EMT inside the ambulance, stabbing him during the struggle. The driver pulled over to help and was then threatened by Avena, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators say the uninjured EMT was able to trap Avena inside the ambulance before running down the road to get help. A passing Chino Mine contractor stopped and assisted until deputies arrived.
The injured EMT was taken to another location for treatment. His condition has not been released.
Avena was arrested and charged with aggravated battery upon a healthcare worker, aggravated assault upon a healthcare worker, and two counts of tampering with evidence.
The investigation remains ongoing.
