Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — The New Mexico Health Care Authority says more than 19,000 lawfully present immigrants are expected to lose federal SNAP benefits this year as their renewals come up. New rules that took effect January 1st narrow which immigration categories qualify, including refugees, asylees, and people allowed into the U.S. for urgent humanitarian reasons. To help, the state will launch a temporary, state-funded food assistance program that will provide a one-time payment to affected households, using money approved by lawmakers during October’s special session.
