ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Two major New Mexico highways reopened this morning after separate fatal incidents in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, though parts of one interstate remain closed as police continue their investigations.
I‑40 reopened in both directions between Wyoming and Juan Tabo after being shut down overnight for a fatal police shooting. According to Albuquerque Police, the incident began around 3:30 p.m. with reports of a wrong‑way driver near Eubank.
Police say the man sideswiped another vehicle before abandoning his car near a nearby dealership. Officers say he pointed a gun at them, prompting APD’s SWAT team to respond and shut down the freeway for safety.
Investigators say the man also fired at a police drone during a six‑hour standoff. Officers shot and killed him at the scene. His name has not been released, but police say he had an extensive criminal history. The investigation remains active.
In Santa Fe, I‑25 is open again at mile marker 283 near Old Pecos Trail after an overnight closure.
Santa Fe Police say the crash happened around 8 p.m. when 31‑year‑old Angelo Romero of Santa Fe lost control of his vehicle. The car rolled, ejecting Romero, who was then struck by several vehicles. He was the only person in the car and died at the scene.
The Traffic Unit and Crime Scene Unit continued processing the area into the morning.
Both agencies say their investigations are ongoing. Drivers should expect intermittent delays in the affected areas as police wrap up their work.
