Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – The state of New Mexico does not have toll roads anywhere in the state. The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) officials emphasize that New Mexico does not operate any toll roads within state boundaries and will never request toll payments from residents or visitors.
Residents around the state are reporting getting text messages stating they need to pay up or face legal action for not paying their tolls. The problem is that there are no tolls in New Mexico that need to be paid. The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department and NMDOT have sent out warnings that if you get a text message about owing money for unpaid tolls, delete the message immediately.
The text message says in part “enforcement action will begin after Wednesday Feb. 4” in some cases people are receiving phone calls and emails with links to fake sites and QR codes to pay the money, which is all fake.
The messages also threaten suspension of your vehicle registration, driver’s license and even legal action.
Remember New Mexico does not have toll roads and they don’t collect for other states that do have tolls and toll agencies would send you a letter
not a text message if you did owe money.
