ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Bernalillo County has announced six finalists for the New Mexico COVID Memorial Public Art Project, following a multi-phase public art selection process.
The memorial will feature six unique perforated metal panels designed to honor lives lost during the COVID-19 pandemic and recognize its impact on communities across New Mexico. The finalists chosen to create these designs are Honor Heindl, Daniel Olivas, Lea Anderson, Sean “Rising Sun” Flanagan, Joe Ray, and Ben Harrison.
Maquettes of the proposed designs are currently on display at BernCo at Alvarado Square, 415 Silver Ave. SW, and will remain available for public viewing through January 28. The Bernalillo County Commission is scheduled to consider the project on January 27, and if approved, fabrication of the memorial panels will begin shortly after.
The selection committee included representatives from the New Mexico COVID Memorial Committee, the Mesa del Sol Neighborhood Association Board, the Bernalillo County Arts Board, the project’s landscape architect, and Parks and Recreation staff.
The memorial aims to serve as a lasting tribute to those lost during the pandemic and a reflection of the collective resilience of New Mexico communities.
