Santa Fe, NM(KKOB) — According to information by the Santa Fe Police Department, at approximately 1:12 p.m. this afternoon the officers responded to the 800 block of Calle Mejia following a report of a male armed with a rifle on the roof top of a business and who discharged a firearm. They stated they heard two shots fired and saw a male armed with a rifle on top of the Santa Fe Spa.
Police officers immediately responded to the location and initiated a canvas of the area for the suspect.
While the officers were searching the area, they spoke with several people who reported they had heard what they believed were gunshots in the area.
A reverse 911 was conducted to inform people in the geographic area of the incident to shelter indoors and a city-wide alert was issued identifying where the shelter in place order was issued, and the complete road closure of all lanes of St. Francis Drive between NM 599 and Alamo Drive.
A large police response to the incident followed. Resources included the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) team to deploy their drones to assist officers with a ground search, and Special Operations personnel.
In addition to SFPD personnel, area agencies including New Mexico State Police and the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office provided resources to assist with road closures. NMSP also deployed their Aircraft Unit to assist with the search.
During the search, officers reported hearing what appeared to be the sound of gunfire west of Calle Mejia. After several hours, the search was complete, the suspect was not located, and no one was found to be injured. The shelter in place and road closure was lifted at approximately 4:45 pm.
SFPD is asking area residents and businesses within the area that the shelter in place was issued to check their property for any damage, security video of the armed person or potential evidence items related to this incident.
