ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – New Mexico’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 4.2 percent in November 2025, down from 4.4 percent a year earlier. In contrast, the national unemployment rate rose to 4.6 percent.
The state added 11,600 nonagricultural jobs over the year, a 1.3 percent increase. Most gains came from the private sector, which grew by 7,700 jobs. Health care and social assistance led the way with 8,400 new positions, up 6.5 percent, while construction added 3,100 jobs, a 5.6 percent increase. Mining also saw modest growth, adding 300 jobs.
Other sectors posted gains, including financial activities, up 1,600 jobs, and leisure and hospitality, up 800 jobs. However, professional and business services lost 4,700 jobs, and federal government employment fell sharply, down 2,900 jobs or nearly 10 percent.
Local government education saw the largest public sector increase, adding 4,600 jobs, an 8.3 percent jump. State government employment also grew, while federal jobs declined.
Overall, five of nine private industries reported gains compared to last year, with health care and construction continuing to drive growth.
