ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The man accused of shooting an Albuquerque police officer during a foot chase on Sunday has died from his injuries.
Police identified the suspect as Luis Arreola-Palma, 32, who was on APD’s Top 25 Auto Theft Offender list for December and had two outstanding warrants. Investigators say officers were trying to arrest Arreola-Palma near Coors Boulevard and Iliff Road NW when he opened fire, striking the officer’s radio. The officer was not seriously hurt.

A second officer returned fire, hitting Arreola-Palma several times. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
APD says multiple investigations are underway. The Multi-Agency Task Force will review the case and forward it to the District Attorney’s Office. APD’s Internal Affairs Force Division will also examine whether department policies were followed. The city’s Superintendent of Police Reform will make any disciplinary decisions, and APD’s Force Review Board will look for policy changes.
