Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –Brackish water projects across NM will soon get some attention. The NM Environment Department and Office of the State Engineer have awarded more than $25.9 million to several counties for brackish water projects. Brackish water cannot be used for drinking or certain agricultural crops without treatment. Environment Secretary James Kenney said in a statement, “NM is taking the challenge of preserving our most precious resource for future generations head-on.” Estimates are the state has up to 1.3 trillion gallons of brackish water stored underground statewide. The funding will go to projects in Socorro, Dona Ana, Bernalillo, Cibola and Sandoval counties. The state says more grant funding will be awarded in the coming months.
