Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Sen. Anthony Thornton, of Sandia Park, says he’s still working on a bill for a $3 million, three-year pilot program allowing schools to rate library books for sexual and violent content and possibly materials about LGBTQ+ issues and race and remove them from general circulation. The bill will be introduced in the 30-day legislative session scheduled to begin Jan. 20th. Thornton says that under the proposal, the New Mexico Public Education Department would oversee the program’s implementation, though specifics about the ratings systems will be decided by individual schools.
