ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – AAA New Mexico is forecasting a surge in Thanksgiving travel across the Mountain Region, with gas prices holding steady compared to last year. Between November 25 and December 1, an estimated 6.3 million residents will travel 50 miles or more from home — a 2.9% increase over 2024 and a new regional record. That’s nearly 181,000 more travelers on the road.
Nationally, 81.8 million Americans are expected to travel for the holiday, up 1.6 million from last year.
“From road trips on I-25 and I-40 to flights out of Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexicans go the extra mile to spend time with family and friends,” said Galen Grillo, vice president and general manager of AAA New Mexico.
Peak travel times are expected Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after. Drivers should anticipate congestion and possible delays from construction, crashes, or weather.
