Rio Rancho, New Mexico – After more than a decade in office, Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull is calling it quits—but not politics. Hull announced Tuesday he will not seek reelection in 2026, choosing instead to focus on his run for governor.
Hull, who has served as mayor since 2014, launched his gubernatorial campaign in April as the first Republican to enter the race. State Senator Steve Lanier joined the GOP field earlier this month, while three Democrats are also running.
Rio Rancho voters will elect a new mayor on March 3, 2026. Candidates can officially file starting January 6, but two contenders have already announced their bids: Michael Meek, chair of the Sandoval County Commission, and Paul Wymer, a Rio Rancho city councilor representing District 4.
Hull’s decision ends an 11-year tenure that saw Rio Rancho grow into one of New Mexico’s fastest-developing cities, setting the stage for a competitive mayoral race next spring.
