ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – A judge has ruled that the youngest suspect charged in the death of Albuquerque bicyclist Scott Habermehl can receive treatment at a secure behavioral health facility outside New Mexico.
The suspect was 11 years old when Habermehl was killed in May 2024. Prosecutors say the child was part of a group of juveniles who intentionally struck Habermehl with a stolen car as he biked to work near Indian School and Louisiana. The attack was recorded and posted on social media, drawing national attention for its brutality and the ages of those involved.
Court records show the decision to allow out-of-state treatment came after arguments about the level of care available in New Mexico. The judge ruled the suspect must return to the state after completing treatment. Other juveniles charged in the case remain in custody as proceedings continue.
