Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — New Mexico is appealing the federal government’s denial of disaster mitigation funding after severe summer storms, floods, and landslides. The state’s Homeland Security department says it requested support through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program but was turned down. Since 2020, New Mexico communities have submitted over $119 million in project applications, but only $19.7 million has been awarded. Officials say delays and reduced funding threaten future disaster preparedness. The state is awaiting a response from FEMA while continuing to support affected communities.
