APD says man was attacking woman with hammer before fatal shooting
ALBUQUERQUE — Newly released information from the Albuquerque Police Department outlines the events leading up to a fatal officer-involved shooting on September 29, 2025, at a West Side apartment.
According to APD, 42-year-old Brian Womack made multiple 911 calls in the days before the incident, reporting suspicious activity and concerns about a female friend. On the morning of the shooting, officers responded to his apartment on Ceja Vista Road after reports of a disturbance.
Police say Womack and a woman had barricaded themselves inside the apartment and refused to open the door. Officers returned multiple times before hearing screams and deciding to force entry. As they attempted to enter, Womack allegedly struck the woman with a hammer and was preparing to strike again when Officer Diego Tena fired several rounds.
Womack was pronounced dead at the scene. A multi-agency task force is investigating the incident, and APD’s Internal Affairs Division will review whether department policies were followed.
