ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Police are investigating a deadly shooting involving a security guard at a Spirit Halloween store near Carlisle Boulevard and Indian School Road.
The incident happened Thursday afternoon at the shopping complex that formerly housed a Whole Foods. Police say the security guard, identified as Josiah Armijo, shot and killed a man suspected of shoplifting.
According to investigators, the confrontation began when Armijo attempted to stop the man from leaving the store with approximately $90 worth of unpaid merchandise. Surveillance video reviewed by police shows Armijo tackling the man and pulling him into a steel pole. The footage also captured Armijo striking the man, threatening to shoot him, and drawing his firearm.
Police say pepper spray was used during the struggle, which escalated into a physical fight. Two gunshots were heard on the surveillance video. The man died from his injuries before officers arrived.
Following the investigation, Armijo was charged with second-degree murder. APD determined that the use of deadly force was not necessary in the situation.
Police remained on scene late into the evening Thursday. The investigation is ongoing.
