FARMINGTON, N.M. — Private well owners in San Juan County will have the opportunity to test their drinking water for free this weekend.
The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) are hosting a free domestic well water testing event on Saturday, October 18, at the Farmington Grower’s Market, located at 3041 E Main St. Testing will be available from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., or while supplies last.
The event is open to residents who rely on private wells for drinking water. Testing, which typically costs around $150, will be free for the first 100 participants. Results will be mailed to households within two to three weeks.
To participate, residents must bring a properly collected water sample and basic information about their well, including depth, casing material, and distance from septic systems. Samples should be collected in clean containers, after letting the water run for two to three minutes, and as close to the event time as possible.
If a well owner cannot attend, a family member or neighbor may bring the sample on their behalf, provided it is clearly labeled with the owner’s contact and well information.
The tests will measure pH, specific conductance, and nitrate levels—key indicators of water safety. High nitrate levels, in particular, can pose health risks to infants and pregnant women.
While the state does not regulate private wells, officials say these “water fairs” help residents better understand and manage their water quality. Since 2022, NMED has tested over 750 wells at similar events across New Mexico.
