ESPAÑOLA, N.M. — Two 15-year-olds have been indicted in connection with a deadly crime spree in Española that left one woman dead and targeted individuals outside a homeless shelter.
A grand jury charged both teens with first-degree murder for the May 31 killing of Monica Carter. Prosecutors say the suspects also fired shots at people near a shelter in Española. No injuries were reported in that incident.
Both teens have pleaded not guilty. The state is requesting pretrial detention, citing previous charges involving violent behavior.
One teen faces additional counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery, conspiracy, and unlawful possession of a handgun. The other is charged with tampering with evidence, conspiracy to commit aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and unlawful possession of a handgun.
The case is ongoing, and a judge will decide whether the teens will remain in custody as proceedings continue.
