ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A 14-year-old student in Albuquerque who was arrested for bringing a gun to school is scheduled to be released to his parents, following a juvenile court ruling on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident took place on October 3 at an Albuquerque high school, where the student was reportedly seen with a handgun equipped with a laser sight inside a school bathroom. According to investigators, the teen was handling the weapon when another student noticed and alerted school staff.
Authorities say the student attempted to hide the firearm in a locker before it was recovered by police. Alongside the handgun, officers found a magazine containing 19 rounds of ammunition.
The student is facing two charges: unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor and possession of a firearm on school grounds.
During the custody hearing, prosecutors from the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office questioned the student’s parents about any prior criminal history involving firearms. The parents denied any such history. However, court records indicate that the student’s father has previously been arrested in at least one case involving firearms.
The court’s decision to release the teen to his parents has prompted concern among some community members, though officials have not commented publicly on the conditions of the release.
The Albuquerque Public Schools district has not released additional details about disciplinary actions or school safety measures following the incident.
