ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico residents were treated to free admission Monday at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta as part of “New Mexico Day,” an annual tradition recognizing the state’s continued support of the world-renowned event.
Attendees who presented a photo ID or utility bill with a New Mexico address received complimentary entry. Active-duty military personnel and children 12 and under were also admitted free. Parking fees still applied.
The morning began with a green flag for flight, signaling safe conditions for balloon launches. Events kicked off with a drone light show sponsored by Sandia Resort & Casino, followed by Dawn Patrol and a mass ascension of roughly 200 balloons. Competition flights also began, with 150–200 pilots launching from off-site locations and aiming for targets on the field.
Women were prominently represented, with 66 female pilots—nearly 13% of this year’s roster—gathering for a group photo after the 6:00 a.m. pilot briefing.
The Balloon of the Day was sponsored by Xfinity, and the National Anthem was performed by Cat Powdrell.
Later in the evening, Balloon Fiesta hosted its first-ever off-site event: Globito Glow in the Village, featuring 66 remote-control balloons along historic Route 66 in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. The event also included the reveal of the 2026 Balloon Fiesta theme, which will center around Route 66.
All events were weather-permitting, and Monday’s conditions allowed for a full schedule of activities. A complete event schedule is available at balloonfiesta.com.
