Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — The U.S. Forest Service is launching a major wildfire prevention project this fall in northern New Mexico. The Encino Vista Landscape Restoration Project will cover nearly 120,000 acres in the Santa Fe National Forest near communities like Coyote, Gallina, and Youngsville. Crews will thin overgrown trees, repair deteriorating roads, and conduct prescribed burns. Officials say the goal is to reduce wildfire risk, especially after destructive fires like Hermits Peak Calf Canyon in 2022 and Black Feather in 2023. Work begins next week and could take up to 15 years.
