ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As the federal government enters a shutdown, New Mexico political leaders are responding with sharply contrasting views.
Deb Haaland, Democratic candidate for governor, released a statement criticizing Republican leadership for the shutdown. She said over 22,000 federal workers in New Mexico are now facing uncertainty, and warned of impacts on WIC benefits, veterans’ services, and rural healthcare. Haaland also blamed GOP policies for rising healthcare costs and pledged to expand mobile clinics and strengthen Medicaid coverage if elected.
“A better New Mexico is possible,” Haaland said. “I’m ready to fight every day for our healthcare, education, safety, and livelihoods.”
Meanwhile, Amy Barela, Chairwoman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, issued a statement targeting Democratic Congressman Gabe Vasquez, who voted against a GOP-led funding bill. Barela accused Vasquez of helping trigger the shutdown and putting service members, Border Patrol agents, and small businesses at risk.
“Out-of-touch Democrat Gabe Vasquez is grinding America to a halt,” Barela said. “New Mexicans deserve better. We will not forgive this betrayal.”
The shutdown and its fallout are expected to be central issues in upcoming state and federal elections.
