ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – A 17-year-old charged in the September 16 murder of Angelo Tafoya will remain in custody, according to the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office.
Investigators say the teen and 18-year-old Austin Olimb met Tafoya at the Ridge Apartments on Tramway Blvd. NE for a gun and drug transaction. Prosecutors allege the pair conspired to rob Tafoya during the meeting. Olimb reportedly admitted to detectives that he shot Tafoya twice, then fired two more rounds “just to double check” he was dead.
The suspects fled the scene in a stolen blue Hyundai Elantra, which was later identified by police. Deputies with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office arrested the pair the next day while they were driving a different stolen vehicle—a red Hyundai Elantra. Inside, deputies found two firearms, including Tafoya’s gun, and other stolen weapons.
Authorities say both suspects were involved in multiple vehicle thefts. The 17-year-old has had 10 prior cases in the juvenile justice system in less than two years and now faces charges including murder, armed robbery, conspiracy, and tampering with evidence.
Olimb is scheduled to appear in court today.
