President Donald Trump said he is hopeful the person who assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk will be apprehended.
“They have a virtual manhunt out there, we’ll see what happens,” Trump said Thursday. “We hope we get him.”
Authorities say they have tracked the suspected gunman’s movements before, during, and after the Utah Valley University shooting Wednesday that killed Kirk, and also have recovered what they believe to be the weapon used.
Officials said the suspect arrived near the campus at 11:52 a.m., moved through stairwells to a rooftop, fired from a shooting position, then fled across the roof, jumped from the building, and escaped into a nearby neighborhood. Investigators canvassed the area, speaking to witnesses and viewing doorbell cameras.
Investigators confirmed they recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle in a wooded area where the shooter fled. The FBI said it will analyze the weapon, along with collected footwear impressions, a palm print, and forearm imprints.
Authorities confirmed they have clear video of the suspect, described as appearing “college-age,” but are not yet releasing images.
Trump also announced he will posthumously award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Kirk.
“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty, and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said. “I have no doubt that Charlie’s voice and the courage he put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on.”
