Albuquerque, NM – PNM is warning customers about the dangers and costs of copper theft as part of its annual Copper Theft Awareness Month this September.
Copper is widely used in electrical wiring due to its durability and conductivity, but its high market value has made it a frequent target for thieves. In 2024, PNM received 110 copper theft reports from businesses across New Mexico. The utility says these incidents can lead to power outages, expensive repairs, and serious safety hazards.
One local nonprofit, Adelante, was among the victims. Click here for an interview with Adelante and click here for pictures and b-roll.
Thieves often target green transformer boxes, leaving live wires exposed. Customers may notice power fluctuations, sparking electronics, or arcing near meter boxes. PNM urges the public to avoid damaged equipment and report it immediately by calling 888-DIAL PNM.
Throughout September, PNM is sharing information to help residents and businesses identify copper theft, report incidents, and take steps to deter future thefts.
