NEW MEXICO – As fall approaches, many New Mexicans are looking to get vaccinated against COVID-19. But access to the updated vaccine is limited, especially at major pharmacy chains like CVS and Walgreens.
The delay stems from state regulations requiring approval from the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) before pharmacists can administer any vaccine. The ACIP has not yet reviewed or recommended the new COVID vaccine formula, leaving pharmacies unable to offer it.
“There have been some delays and difficulties in making appointments and getting the vaccine approved,” said Dr. Chad Smelser, medical epidemiologist with the New Mexico Department of Health.
Over the weekend, NMDOH issued a public health order directing agencies to work together to remove barriers. However, the order cannot override existing state law unless a Public Health Emergency is declared.
CVS and Walgreens have not lifted their restrictions and are waiting for the ACIP’s official recommendation. There is no timeline for when that decision will be made.
The updated vaccine is approved by the FDA for people 65 and older and those with certain medical conditions. NMDOH expects to receive its full supply of the vaccine by the end of September.
