ROSWELL, N.M. — Roswell’s Municipal Court has been ranked No. 16 on a national list of the “100 Ugliest Public Buildings in the U.S.” The survey, conducted by the Robert Dekanski Team, a New Jersey-based real estate group, gathered input from more than 3,000 participants.
The courthouse, located at N. Richardson Avenue and W. 5th Street, has served the city since 2004. Originally built as a New Mexico Gas Co. office in the mid-20th century, the structure was converted into a courthouse with minimal renovations. Its boxy shape, painted brick exterior, and lack of architectural detailing contributed to its placement on the list.
The survey described the building as functional but lacking visual appeal, noting its resemblance to a standard business office. Compared to other ranked buildings, Roswell’s courthouse stands out for its stark simplicity and utilitarian design.
Architectural experts say such designs are common in publicly funded projects, where budget constraints often prioritize durability and function over aesthetics. The building’s flat roof, recessed windows, and plain white interior reflect those priorities.
Despite its appearance, the courthouse continues to serve its purpose efficiently. Staff have made efforts to personalize the space, and occasional landscaping efforts add a touch of color to the otherwise austere exterior.
