Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — UNM nursing students can get hands-on training by providing care at the City of Albuquerque’s Gateway West shelter. Through a new pilot program students complete a three-week rotation at the shelter and work with about 100 residents. The students provided first aid, assessed the health care needs of residents in the 12 dorms, and provided education on chronic illnesses, medications, and overall health. The UNM College of Nursing assistant dean of Undergraduate Education says the program has helped students better understand the realities of care while building connections in the community and making a difference.
