ISLETA PUEBLO, New Mexico — High levels of E. coli have been detected in the Rio Grande near Isleta Pueblo, prompting local officials to issue a warning to the community.
According to an executive order from the Pueblo’s governor, residents are advised to avoid swimming and fishing in the river until further notice. Officials emphasized that the public drinking water supply is not affected at this time.
E. coli, or Escherichia coli, is a type of bacteria commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals. While many strains are harmless, some can cause serious illness. Exposure to contaminated water can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. In rare cases, certain strains like E. coli O157:H7 can result in kidney failure or other severe complications.
The contamination has raised concerns about water safety and environmental monitoring in the region. Officials have not yet confirmed the source of the bacteria, but runoff from animal waste, sewage, or other pollutants are common contributors.
