Sheliky Sanchez
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An 18-year-old is behind bars after allegedly admitting to killing an Uber driver early Thursday morning in what police say was a deliberate act of violence.
According to Albuquerque Police, Sheliky Sanchez ordered a ride around 3 a.m. and selected Joseph Andrus from several available drivers. Investigators say Sanchez told detectives he intended to either steal the car or kill the driver. After asking Andrus to pull over near Coors and Central, Sanchez allegedly shot him multiple times. Andrus died at the scene.
Detectives traced the ride request to Sanchez, who was arrested shortly after at a home connected to his girlfriend. During questioning, Sanchez reportedly told officers he was feeling stressed and wanted to “let off steam.”
Authorities say the killing appears to be random, with no prior connection between Sanchez and the victim. Prosecutors have filed for pretrial detention, citing the nature of the crime and public safety concerns. A judge is expected to decide next week whether Sanchez will remain in custody pending trial.
No plea has been entered, and the investigation remains ongoing.
