ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico resumed its New Student Orientation on Wednesday, less than a week after a fatal shooting at the Casas Del Rio dormitory.
Michael LaMotte, 14, was identified as the victim in the July 25 shooting. The two-day orientation was canceled following the incident. According to UNM, about 400 students were registered for the session.
On Tuesday, students and families received an email confirming that orientation and fall class registration would continue as planned on July 30, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“We want to do our best to ensure that students have a great start,” said Jose Villar, director of College Enrichment and Outreach Programs. “We dedicated today to helping students from last week’s session get registered and access support resources.”
UNM staff held a Zoom session with students and families earlier in the week, with about 200 participants. Academic advisors were also brought in to assist with course planning.
The fall semester begins August 18.
New Mexico State Police say LaMotte was visiting the dorm with his half-brother when the shooting occurred. His mother contacted UNM Police around 2:15 a.m. after learning of the incident from a family friend. The investigation is ongoing.
