Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –The deadly parasitic New World screwworm has been spotted less than 400 miles from the Southwest border. Texas Sen. John Cornyn, says the screwworm flies could devastate border state’s cattle industry if it crosses onto U.S. soil. Adding, an outbreak could cost Texas livestock producers approximately $1 billion alone, and cost the general economy $3.7 billion. Besides cattle, wildlife would be susceptible to large infections as well. Consumers could feel the impact if the screwworm crosses the border, with the price of food, especially beef, expected to go up at grocery stores and restaurants.
