ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque police have arrested two men in connection with the July 2 shooting death of 43-year-old Ann Marie Chaires in Southeast Albuquerque.
Nicholas Lucio, 43, was taken into custody late Saturday. He is the second suspect arrested in the case, following the earlier arrest of 49-year-old Matthew Mitchem, also known by the nickname “Bam Bam.” Both men are charged with an open count of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
According to investigators, three masked men — including Lucio and Mitchem — confronted Chaires at an apartment on Madeira Drive SE. Witnesses told police the confrontation was over a Harley Davidson motorcycle that had been left at the apartment for safekeeping. The men accused Chaires of selling the bike and demanded she retrieve it. When she refused, one of the men allegedly fired a single shot, striking her in the head. Chaires died at the scene.
Detectives say Mitchem owned the motorcycle and had arranged to store it at the apartment weeks before the shooting. Arrest warrants were issued for both suspects on July 9. Mitchem was arrested on July 11 and Lucio was booked into the Metro Detention Center on Saturday.
According to police, the investigation is ongoing.
