MESCALERO, N.M. — A New Mexico man is facing federal charges after allegedly assaulting and strangling a woman over a two-day period on the Mescalero Apache Reservation.

Investigators say 35-year-old Philman Sam Pike repeatedly assaulted and strangled the woman, at times to the point of near unconsciousness. The victim was transported to a hospital, where medical staff confirmed signs of strangulation and serious bodily injury.
Pike was later located hiding at a nearby residence and taken into custody. He is charged with assault by strangling or suffocating and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He remains in custody while awaiting trial.
